You don’t have to look far online to find weird news. I have read some really weird news stories since I got online. News of the Weird is a website that is chock full of weird news.In Texas, weird news includes a 1996 story about a Texan from Humble that patented a burglary decoy device. The device was essentially a mask that was put into the window.Also in 1996, there was a weird news story from Arizona about a man that was stopped at customs trying to bring 12,700 dead scorpions across the border in an ice chest. That is very weird.The weird news section for California is headed up with a report from 1995. The weird news report is about a 24 year old woman in San Bernardino that abandoned her three-year-old child at a shopping center to attend a Grateful Dead concert. She and her husband plead guilty to abandonment and her parents took custody of the child.The Oregon weird news section on the News of the Weird website has an article that relates to corpse abuse. There was a man in 1994 that petitioned the courts in his hometown to allow a woman to use her dead husband’s skin to make covers for editions of his poetry. The court did not allow this request in the dead husband’s will to be fulfilled.A funny weird news story from Montana is about an escapee that ran into the warden from his prison at a Seattle Mariner’s baseball game. This happened in 1991.An Idaho weird news story from 1994 was about an old blind pervert. The 69 year old resident of Mountain Home, Idaho was charged with having sex with two 12-year old girls. He claimed that the charges should be dropped since he could not see the girls and did not know how young they were.In may of 1993, a Kenosha, Wisconsin man made weird news. He was arrested inside of a women’s restroom at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He was charged with disorderly conduct. He was dressed as a French maid, bound and handcuffed when he was arrested. Police say he had been arrested before for a similar incident where had also paid a female student to tie him up, claiming it was part of a fraternity prank.News That Didn’t Make The NewsThere really are a whole lot of things that pass for news in this country that aren’t really news stories at all and plenty of news stories that are real never get covered, or at least covered very little.There is very little news reported that matters anymore. The top unreported news stories of 2005 are very interesting. I think that the Bush administration moving to eliminate open government is news. There have been changes to laws that provide public access to federal records; I consider this to be disturbing news.The media coverage failed the American people during the Iraq War and the siege on Fallujah. The big news story should have been the large civilian death toll. It wasn’t, though. What was reported was a subversion of truth and that is not news.Election coverage is news. This is not very good news, but news nonetheless. I think it is news when a Republican election supervisor manipulates the vote. I might be wrong, but I don’t think so.I think that the surveillance of the American people is huge news. I am not the only one that thinks that, either. There are a lot of patriotic Americans that think the news of wiretapping and the monitoring of activist groups is disgusting.I wonder why the news that the United States actually used the devastating Southeast Asian tsunami for a military advantage never made it to the masses. I don’t have to ponder this question too long, though, because I know why. The people that run our government tell us what the news is.Last week, America reported that someone had been arrested in a ten year old murder case. This is news, but it isn’t bigger news than a volcanic eruption in Ecuador or the illegal bombing of Lebanon by Israel. Those are bigger news stories and I won’t apologize for my opinion on that matter.
